Colorful city full with colourful tiles which hauling you towards old times, telling you the stories about behind those tiles. Yes, I am talking about Lisbon; city of colors, city of tiles, city of sardinia.

Rengarenk seramiklerle dolu  rengarenk bir sehir size seramiklerin arkalarindaki hikayeleri anlatarak sizi gecmise dogru surukluyor. Evet, Lizbon’dan bahsediyorum; renklerin sehri, seramiklerin sehri, sardinyalarin sehri.

Every city has sister city in the world and Istanbul’s sister city is Lisbon. This is the most true matching ever with hills, bridges, narrow roads and many others. Every steps you chase the similarities in between them and your astonishment never ends. Every single corner of the cit made me feel that I was still in Istanbul.

Lisbon complete deserves to being Istanbul’s sister city. Nothing less, nothing more… You will get what i meant with pictures. a6a0-1368-143e-cd29

I always love Mediterranean countries and their  friendly, warm people. Anywhere in Mediterranean country you feel like you have been living in that cities for ages, cities and people are always most welcoming.

I had a chance to witness friendly hospitality on other Mediterranean countries now I definitely confirm this theory with including Portugal. Mediterranean countries and their people are the best one.

Portugal is rising star of Mediterranean and it should be definitely on your bucket list, especially for summer. There are an amazing places to see, beautiful beaches and many others. It is popular destination for surfing as well.  I have to say that for food and fish, Spain is much more ahead of Portugal, keep your expectation lower if you tasted Spanish and Greek foods before.

Portekiz, Akdeniz’in yukselen yildizi ve muhakkak tatil listenizde olmali, ozellikle yaz tatilleri icin.

Yes, probably first two thing. And what else ?

Cock ? Tiles ? Vasco da Gama ? Alvaro Siza? sardinia ? and many others…

Portekiz denilince aklimiza neler geliyor ? Mesela Tram ? Ronaldo ? Mourinho? Sardalya?

Evet ? Peki baska ne var? Horoz ? Seramik ? Vasco da Gama? Alvaro Siza ? ver daha bircoklari…

Lets take a journey and discover Portugal together. I mean Lisbon for now.

Yani simdilik sadece Lisbon.

Lisbon is the westernmost capital city of continent Europe. It is one of the oldest city in the world and oldest in Europe, older than Paris and London. Interesting ? More interesting; Lisbon’s statue of being capital is not officially confirmed and granted. It is not a written form of capital in the constitution, basically it becomes de facto capital. Interesting ? Very very …

Until 11th century Portugal was under Arabs ruling. Purely reason of Arabic, Moorish influence all around the city maybe in the country. Lisbon was reconquest in 1147 by Afonso Henriques, first king of the country.  Until 1910, it was ruling with monarchy under different realm and after that  democracy came but had several coup and riot till 80s. During monarchical period, Portugal had so many colonial countries around the world. Toward to 20th century it lost them one by one and last one was Macau, famous casino country in far east,  we remember it from James Bond Skyfall.

Because of colonisation, they expand their language through to the countries. Therefore today approximately 250 million people are speaking Portuguese language which is one of the most 10 speaking language in entire globe. In terms of the language speak across the globe, countries population  is around 10 million which is much more lesser than Istanbul. I know you are doing the equating now language and population, I made it too. Don’t be upset, Turkish is one of the most speaking too.

Monarsi zamanlarinda Portekiz’in dunya genelinde cok fazla kolonisi vardi. 20. yy’e dogru bunlarin hepsini yavas yavas kaybeden ulkenin elinden eon son Macau ayrildi. James Bond- Skyfall’dan hatirladigimiz uzak dogudaki meshur gazino ulkesi olan.

Kolonileri sayesinde tum dunyaya dilleri yaydilar.

Spain is the only neighbour to Portugal. Country is boarded with Atlantic Ocean. No neighbour, no political problems. Portugal has Mediterranean climate so it is warm entire year. Perfect in summer. We were there during the Christmas time and most of the days jumper was enough for us, I can’t imagine how it would be beautiful during the spring and summer. It is a country for 12 months tourism. Good retirement destination for whom interested in.

Country had very massive earthquake and tsunami in 1755, entry country demolished and lost so much wealth and statue in 1755. In today, whatever we see are remade and made after great earthquake. They made good job with all those restoration and remaking, bravo !

I guess this is very much enough for introduction. So, lets take a tour in this lovely city…

Bravo!

Galiba girizgah kismini fazla uzattim. Hadi bu guzel sehirde bir tura cikalim…

Lisbon is very small city, comparing to Istanbul. You can walk to everywhere by foot, don’t need public transport. But for making nostalgia you may hop on and hop off to the traditional yellow trams. Best and most famous one is No.28. Travel almost entire central. It is start from Martin Moniz and takes you to old towns and you could buy ticket from driver.

For me best way to discover the city is walking, loosing yourself in the streets. Lisbon must be walking city too, otherwise how would be amazed with colorful houses and lovely tiles decoration. While you are walking in the street, you are going back to old times, dreaming the previous house owners… Cool!

c8a2-5ec4-066e-a040

Lisbon, Istanbul’a kiyasla cok kucuk bir sehir. Her yere toplu tasimaya ihtiyac duymadan yuruyerek gidebilirsiniz.

Sehirde yururken sanki evlerin eski sahiplerini dusunerek eski zamanlara dogru gidiyorsunuz. Harika!

We stayed in Baixa where are the most hotel are placed and walking distance to everywhere. Unfortunately there is not much nice place to eat nearby, all touristy stuff. You should walk towards to parallel streets for better food places.

810f-56e9-9093-5315Where to go and what to see and what to eat in Lisbon ? 3 full days enough unless you visit during the Christmas time like we did. During our visit everywhere closed or half day opened, miss couple of things we wanted to. Maybe next time…

This is the first and last time for me to make touristic holiday during Christmas.

8a2f-c866-28fa-39b6Santa Justa Lift (Elevador de Santa Justa) : One of the most famous tourist attraction of Lisbon. It is build around 1900’s for bridging between Baixa and Bairo Alto because travelling were always issue because of hills in Lisbon.  45 m height elevator is design with neo-gothic style in iron. Elevator is best place to start journey. On the top it has perfect city panoramic view.

01d1-bc26-f593-0078    city from view deck on Santa Justa Elevator / Santa Justa Asansorunun seyir terasindan sehir

When you lift up with elevator don’t lift down with it and walked towards to other side  you would see Museu Arqueopogico do Carmo and Carmo terrace where the area is effected by one of the most horrible fire in 1988 in Lisbon. In that fire lots of buildings and offices had been destroyed. After the fire council agreed with Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza for developing the masterplan of that part of the city . Obviously he made very good job because this restored terrace is not isolated from city and stand as one of the main part of the city. Patio is restored with traditional paving method therefore it does not damaged the identity of the city. Also this newly created public plaza allow you the reach other part of the district very easily.

Earthquakes, fires and others notwithstanding all those crises, Lisbon we see today is like kept and protected in a bell-jar. They are very good at restoration, deserver a massive applause, please.

F4981-8d1b-0250-7c1eor dinner we went to most famous Lisbon fish restaurant, Cervejaria Ramiro. Oh my God. It is one of the best. If you are fish person like me, Ramiro is heaven for you. Be famished when you go there and dig in yourself into everything. They keep their original interior since 1950s.Take a metro to Intentende and walk towards to Martim Moniz. It is close on Monday. I got hungary while I am typing.

Yazarken aciktim.

Praca do Comercio (Commercial Square): Today what we see is remodelled after 1755 earthquake. Before earthquake there were Royal Ribeira Palaca (that is why it is also called Palace Yard) and many other commercial and ship building facilities. Square is famous commercial area between Portugal and world.  Today square is Lisbon’s architectural symbol. While we were there some Christmas entertainment occurred in the square every night.

22ea-9719-d46c-ae05

Ticaret Meydani: Portekizce ‘Praca’ meydan demek. Noel zamani aksamlari meydanda cok renkli eglenceler yapiliyor.

814d-058c-382b-fb44Alfama: Where does local live ? Where is old original Lisbon’s houses and piazzas ? Answer is Aflama where you see no car on tiny tiny alley, houses close to each other and typical mediterranean houses with clothes hang outside the window. And and Fado! Portugal’s one of the most globally famous thing. You would hear quite, gently Fado music every corner of Alfama. If you want to listen live Fado music, there are plenty of restaurant have dinner with live music.

By the way there are two ways to get to Alfama; by walking which we did, gives a chance to discover the every corner of the old town. Second one is traditional way with tram. No.28 which you could hop on in Martin Moniz. Don’t worry, it is not that far from centre.

77af-4c10-48b7-a006Alfama: Bu sehrin yerlileri nerede yasar ? Lizbon’un orjinal evleri, meydanlari nerede peki ? Cevap; Alfama, hani su arabalarin giremedigi ufak tefek ara sokalarin oldugu, evlerin birbirine yakin oldugu, klasik Akdeniz evlerinde oldugu gibi camasirlarin pencereden disari asildigi. Ve ve Fado! Portekiz’in dunyada en unlu oldugu seylerden biri. Alfama’nin her kosesinde Fado’nun sessiz, sakin muzigini duyabilirsiniz. Eger canli Fado dinlemek isterseniz, canli muzik esliginde aksam yemegi sunan bircok restoran mevcut.

Sehrin her kosesini kesfetme imkani veriyor.

On the way back to town centre, you may want to visit Fado museum and famous Portugal writer Jose Saramago Foundation.

Sehir merkezi dogru geri yururken, eger isterseniz Fado Muzesini gezebilir ve az ilerisinde de Portekizli unlu yazar Jose Saramago vakfini gezebilirsiniz.

Oriente:  Now question is ‘Where is the crazy architecture of Lisbon?’ I don’t want to leave the city without catching any. We said it is the country of Alvara Siza and there must be some good ones and we head to Oriente.

For me cities define with their architecture. So far Lisbon is typical Mediterranean city with its traditional tiles and pracas (squares) but there must be modern architecture too.8301-79a1-fb67-50b2           Gare de Oriente / Oriente tren istasyonu

Benim icin sehirler mimarilerine gore tanimlanirlar.

92f2-a1ed-b7fd-e6e1Lisbon was hosted ‘Expo 98 world’s fair’ in Oriente therefore there are plenty of modern architectures welcome us. Additionally I guess Oriente is developing district of Lisbon. Local talks happy about how 98 Expo was  amazing for the country. They gained so much popularity and wealth.

Lizbon Oriente ’98 Expo’suna’ ev sahipligi yapti. Bunun sayesinde burada bircok modern mimari ile karsilastik. Ayrica Oriente, Lizbon’un kalkinmakta olan bolgesi. Yerel halk 98 Expo’nun harika oldugunu ve ulke icin cok guzel oldugunu halen mutlulukla anlatiyorlar. Expo sayesinde cok fazla un ve zenginlik kazandilar.

Gare de Oriente by Santiago Calatrava. An amazing and interesting masterpiece with evoking natural architecture. Roof evokes leaves and gives organical architectural impact. Typical Calatrava design.

Cati sanki yapraklari animsatirken yapi organic mimari etkisi yapiyor. Klasik bir Calatrava eseri.

Oceanarium by Peter Chermayeff , it is the biggest indoor aquarium in Europe and most enjoyable one. You should definetely visit too. Watching otters and penguins were my favourite one. Does it look like space station or satellite station ? It isn’t charming from exterior but there are nice stuffs in inside. 9cb8-2861-3884-3a69

There is a cable car between Vasco da Gama tower and Oceanarium, it would be best way to commuting in between them.

Lisbon has so much museum and galleries but none of them caught our attention, except; Cultural Central of Belem and Gulbenkian Museum. we met with lovely a shop owner lady in Sintra, she gave lots of information and stories about Portugal and she advised us to visit Museu Calouste Gulbenkian in Praca de Espanha. She said ‘don’t leave the country without seeing Gulbenkian. As soon as we enter the site we thanked to lady for her. Exhibition, building and interior and park are lovely.

Gulbenkian is Armenian businessman and art collector who was born in Turkey and moved to Portugal. Definitely he has great taste of art. He has very interesting life story, google it.

During our visit we haven’t seen any traffic jam, not many people, always question each other where are the locals live ? Are we in a city only for tourist ? On the way to Gulbenkian Foundation we got to answers. So if you wonder about the local dwellings, you should have to visit there.

Gulbenkian’a giderken cevabimizi aldik. Eger bu sehrin yerlileri nerelerde yasiyor diye merak ederseniz, ziyaret etmeniz icin baska bir neden.

  • Cascais & Cabo da Roca:

One of the most beautiful town of Lisbon. Once upon a times it was just a fisher town and got its fame with royal families summer resort destination and now famous with beaches.

If Cabo da Roca is on your list, you must pitstop at Cascais. Best way to get there is from Caus do Sodre train station (Cascais is the last stop).  Before you go to the station visit Padaria Portuguesa, very nice patisserie, it is just across the station. Try coconot pastry and coffees, you will love them.

Istasyona girmeden once istasyonun karsisinda bulunan Padaria Portuguesa pastanesine ugrayin. Hindistan cevizli poacalarini ve kahvelerini deneyin, cok seviceksiniz.

36d9-a3cb-a750-2aeb

We were planning to catch the first train and able to get the sunrise in Cabo da Roca (westernmost spot of European land). Unfortunately we missed the bus for Cabo da Roca and had to wait a hour, at the beginning we were very upset and pissed off because bus stop is very hidden place, if you don’t ask the local you wouldn’t guess it.

I will put this little note for Cabo da Roca bus no.403 towards Sintra. When you leave the train station head to shopping mall and there will be stairs, climb down the stairs and you will see the busses, like hiding teasure placing the bus stop below there. If you plan to visit Sintra in same day or planning to do more things in Cascais and Sintra, you should get daily tourist ticket which you could use as much as you want.

Lets get back to sunrise in Cascais. Yes, we got angry. Instead of waiting inside the station, we walked to beach and Bingo! I had one of the most beautiful sunrise I have ever had. Spectacular!

126c-d8d0-effb-43ef

Cascais’de ki gunesin dogusuna donelim. Evet, kizmistik. Harika otesiydi!

a5e9-0c76-0d65-45b9

Finally! we got the bus and heading to westernmost extend of Europe. Cabo da Roca is also known Europe’s Cape Town and located in Sintra – Cascais national park. It is one of the must seen part of Europe for me.  Imagine, South America is next land after there. I tick one more point on my bucket list.

After a hour drive, we arrived to Cabo da Roca. As soon as you arrive there, you start hearing the ocean. How beautiful. It was one of the most fascinating spot. Ocean’s crazy sounds hitting to rocky cliffs. Shades of blue on ocean and shades of green on the land and unified with brown. What men wants.

9e1a-6eb1-7da7-d321

Sonunda!

Sintra is definitely in love place.  You should give 1-2 days to Sintra, for better exploring. Sintra is very beautiful town where you could see that Arabic influence with Romantic Portuguese architectural touches on every corner of the town.

Apart from the town centre, there are so many places to explore. Probably the most popular one in Lisbon is ‘Pena Palace’. You could see it from anywhere in Sintra. Colourful Palace located on the top of the mountain and saluting you with its vivid colors. If you are lucky you will enjoy its colors. Unlucky us! by the time we went there, weather was extremely foggy and we couldn’t enjoy the palace much. Maybe next time!  It looks like Disney theme park with its colors and absurd facades. It is says that Pena Palace made in an answer to Neuschwanstein Castle. It is debatable how true is it. (more architectural and historical writing on ‘old architecture’ section)

From town centre there are busses to Pena Palace and a stop at ‘Castle of Moors’ is other tourist attraction. You may wanna see 8th- 9th century Muslim made castle. There are many locations where you could clearly see Pena Palace from here.

Eger sansliysaniz tum renklerin keyfini cikarabilirsiniz. Malesef biz sansizdik!

8. – 9. yuzyil Musliman yapimi sarayi belki gormek istersiniz. Buradan Pena Saranin goruldugu cok guzel acilar mevcut.

My favourite place in entire Lisbon is ‘Quinta da Regaleria’;

I don’t even know how to explain this crazy architecture. It has extremely enormous garden and it has every kind of trees and flowers and also lakes, grottoes, fountains, chapel, botanic gardens, wells, tunnels, caves, secret passageways, crypt. Don’t even think of leaving Lisbon before visiting this crazy architexture… (more architectural and historical writing on ‘old architecture’ section)

Tum Lizbon’da benim en sevdigim mekan ise ‘Quinta da Regaleria’;

Ayrica Sintra’da ziyaret edebileceginiz diger yerler;

Sintra Sarayini; Beyaz komik koni seklindeki catilarindan bulabileceginiz saray 1910’a kadar kraliyet ailesinin yazlik evi olarak kullaniliyordu.

Municipal building; built after 1154 and in between on route Palace of Sintra and train station.

Belediye binasi; 1154’ten sonra yapilan binayi Sintra Sarayi dogru giderken gorebilirsiniz.

And also Monserrate Estate; an another building with Arabic touches in Sintra.

And and most famous one; Fountain of Armers was constructed in 1 A.D.  Famous fountain with Arabic and Moorish influence with blue-green tile fountain where everybody has a picture on instagram. Of course! I have one too.

Hani su Lizbon’a giden herkesin onunde resim cektip Instagrama koydugu meshur  Arap, Magribi ezgileri tasiyan mavi-yesil seramikli cesme. Tabii ki de bende cektim 🙂

  • Belem :

Historical part of Lisbon is just 2 stops away from central; Caus do Sodre, with tram and train it takes only  6 mins.

Lizbon’un tarihi bolgesi ise sadece merkezden trenle 2 durak otede. Caus do Sodre’den tren yada tramwayla 6 dakida gidiliyor.

Belem is known with national and religional monuments and Pastel da nata (egg tart pasty). Best one you could try at Pasteis de Belem. Story of Pastel da nata is quite interesting. At the beginning of 1800s, monks at monastery using egg so much for some cookings and they had so much egg yolk as leftover and with them they started to make Pastel da nata and after a while they started to selling to outside and than we all know the rest 🙂 But personally I didn’t like the pastry.

Pasteis de Belem is just 5 mins walking distance to Monastery, if you walk towards to town centre, you would se blue canopy cafee on the lefthand side.

38dc-c191-a35c-3533                    Belem Tower / Belem Kulesi

331b-3cb5-8eb5-7951Discoveries Monument and Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery and Cultural Centre of Belem are touristic places to see. At the beginning I didn’t attracted with Discoveries Monument but if you look closely you would see the cock on ship prow shape monument with discoveries. Portuege’s symbols embroidered very well on the monument. I loved it after close look.

Kasifler Heykeli ve Belem Kulesi ve Jeronimo Manastiri ve Belem Kultur Merkezi, Belem’de ki turistik yerler. Ilk basta Kasifler Aniti pek ilgimi cekmemisti ama dikkatli bakarsaniz horoz motifinin uzerinde gemi burnu ve kasifleri gorebilirsiniz. Heykelin uzerinde Portekiz’in sembolleri guzelce islenmis. Dikkatli baktiktan sonra sevdim.

After Belem, if you have time go to Alcantras for LX Factory. Unfortunatelly we couldn’t make it. Even though we went there twice. We went there on Christmas Day and the day after. On the web site it says it open half day on both days but not on the reality and security goggle at us when we pop up at the entrance. Funny that we were not only people where there, some other tourist checked the web site and came and left with growlingly. Security said to us ‘it will be opened at 6 am on the day after, we didn’t believe to him about 6 am opening but the day after we there at 7 am but this time another security with same goggling with face of ‘what are you doing in here this early’. Web site needs to be updated.

Everybody says LX Factory is one of the best worth seeing place in Lisbon, I would be happy if you go there share with me because I left without seeing it.

Belem’den sonra eger zamaniniz varsa Alcantras‘a LX Factory‘e gidiniz. Malesef ki biz gidemedik. Hemde iki kere kapisindan donmemize ragmen.

Eger siz benimle paylasirsaniz sevinirim cunku ben goremeden dondum.

Let end Lisbon journey with LX Factory.

LX Factory ile Lizbon seyehatimizi noktalayalim.

I really love Lisbon as a person who loves Mediterranean countries and its people. Other cities are already written on my bucket list and took their places for new plans and new dreams.
