Pena Palace vs Neuschwanstein Castle

IMG_9892

Two magnificent, fairytale castle stand on the rocky peaks. They were both dream of king’s fantasy for their dwelling and even still today translating their inner world to the world…

Kayalikli tepedelerde duran iki harika masalsi kale!

IMG_0627

Really ? Are they copy from each other or are they prototype of each other  or  they just inspired to each other?

Gercekten mi ? Birbirlerinin kopyası mi yoksa birbirlerine prototip mi olusturdu ? Ya da sadece birbirlerinden ilham mi aldilar ?

What do you think when you first look at them ? I am hearing some ‘no’s, like you are saying ‘come on, they are very different’.

Ilk baktiginiz zaman ne dusunuyorsunuz ? Sanki ‘hayirlar’ duyuyor gibiyim, ‘hadi ama cok farklilar’ der gibinisiniz.

Yes, there are resemblances in between them but no they are not answer to each other even tough both kings were German and related with.

As a person who has been visited both of the castle, I would be voluntarily your guide while you are discovering those both castle. Lets compare them.

Hadi karsilastiralim.

I have been Neuschwanstein January 2015 and Pena for Christmas 2016. Since high school I have been longing to see Neuschwanstein so badly and I have been Munich many times and every single time, I left the city without seeing it. Finally last year I made it, even though we had to wait more than 2 hours outside on the freezing January in Alpes but it worth it, definitely worth it.

For Pena, it was not as lucky as Neuschwanstein. By the day we went there, weather extremely foggy. We cannot see anything in front us thus we couldnot enjoy the vivid colors of Pena, it was so blur. Unfortunately a colourful castle hidden behind the clouds. Devastating. I get so angry and upset when I see post of Pena on Instagram, to miss those colourful beauty.

IMG_0636

Before I start talking about castles I wanna put small tips in here for future visitor, I know you will thank to me.

Kalelerden bahsetmeden once gidecekler icin suraya birkac kucuk tuyo vereyim. Biliyorum ki sonra bana tesekkur edeceksiniz.

Neuschwanstein:

1-must must book your tickets in advanced online, doesn’t matter which time of the year you are travelling. June and August are the peak time of the year, be prepared.

1- mutlaka ama mutlaka biletinizi onceden online alin, yilin hangi vakti giderseniz gidin! Ozellikle Haziran-Agustos arasi en yogun zamanlar, hazirlikli olun.

2- transportation is very easy and short, don’t need to rent a car. At Fussen station free shuttles to castles.

3- advise you to visit all three; Neuschwanstein castle and Hohenschwangau Castle and Museum (of course advanced booking, otherwise you would wait 1-2 hours in between visits)

4- If you have a change go Marie’s Bridge for better panoramic view of the castle, do it! Don’t be lazy!

4- Marienin Koprusu’ne gitme sansiniz olursa kalenin harika panaromic resmini gorebilirsiniz. Yapin! Tembellik etmeyin!

Pena;

1-Check the weather, climate before visit, as it is places peak of the mountain sometimes of the year it might be foggy. Don’t leave there like us with crying.

1- Gitmeden hava durumunu, iklimi kontrol edin, dagin tepesinde bulundugu icin yilin belli zamanlari sisli olabiliyor. Bizim gibi aglayarak donmeyin.

2- Before Pena visit Castle of Moors, you would get magnificent and larger pictures of Pena from here.

2- Pena’yi ziyaret etmeden once Magribi Kalesini (Castle of Moors) ziyaret edin,  buradan Pena Sarayi’nin harika ve genis karelerini yakalayabilirsiniz.

3- Don’t just visit the palace, walk and discover forest and its 500 different species of trees, definitely worth seeing, Maybe picnicking or horse riding. Horse might be more fun.

At binmek daha eglenceli olabilir.

4- Arrange your visit around sunset time thereby you would see a splendid sunset over Atlantic (of course, if the weather is good, otherwise just white clouds)

4- Ziyaretinizi gun batmasına dogru ayarlayin ve boylece Atlantik Okyanusu uzerinde harika bir gun batimini izleme sansini yakalayabilirsiniz. (tabii eger hava guzelse, aksi taktirde sadece beyaz bulutlar gorursunuz)

I hope my tips would be a little bit helpful and now it is the time for talking about architecture and history of the castles.

If we need to gender the castle, I would definitely label Pena Palace as woman and Neuschwanstein as man. Colourful lady and macho gentlemen. Then ladies first;

Eger bu kalelere cinsiyet aidiyet vermemiz gerekirse, Pena Sarayi’ni kesinlikle kadin olarak, Neuschwanstein Kalesi’ni de erkek olarak tanimlarim. Renkli hanimefendi ve maco gentilmen.  E o zaman onden bayanlar;

PENA PALACE / SARAYI

Pena Palace knows as ‘the feather palace‘ too. I couldn’t learn why neither understand the reason, maybe you would share it with me.

Park and National Palace of Pena is Unesco World Heritage Site  since 1995 and it is located into massive park towards to peak of Sintra.

Pena Palace is seen almost every part of Sintra with interesting shapes and architecture and it welcomes you with its reds and yellows turrets not even you to reach to there.

Cliffs from entrance to palace was intentionally made by German architect to able to give castle influence to the palace.

Once upon a times it was meditation place for monks and now it is Lisbon’s most touristic attraction. Who knows what would happen tomorrow ? Any guess ?

Let’s have small journey into history now; Around 12th century there was a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Pena. 16th century, it was converted to monastery. In 1755, site was damaged by great earthquake and lighthing and also in early 18th century, places was abonded due to the abolition of religion in Portugal. Couple of years later King Ferdinand II (also known as Artist King) acquire the former Hieronymite monastery and surrounding areas including Moorish Castle. It was used summer residence of king and his royal family for a long time. Yes very great place for summer residence. After Ferdinand II’s death palace was inherited to his second wife Elisa. After a while palace was sold to King Luis I. Probably bills were high or place was big for one person. In 1889 palace was acquisition by Portugal state.  In 1910 country had a revolution and royal family forced to flee to exile to Brazil. Queen Amelia (last royal of Portuguese) spent her last night at the palace. Since 1911 it serves as museum. In 1990 Palace was repainted after faded of its beautiful colors. I thought there is still a royal family in Portugal, because there some in other European countries and asked ‘where are the royals now?’ to the stuff in the palace and she goggle at me like I asked very naughty question. This is the part traveling is the best best education, how could I know royal flee to exile in 1910, know I am expert about Portugal history.

Construction of castle-like-residence was started in 1842 and completed in 1854. Initially King Ferdinand II began with repairing the former monastery. In 1843, enlargement of property commissioned to German amateur architect Baron Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschewege. He inspired German Bavarian Castle with romantic style architecture on his travels to Rhine Valley in Germany. Also King was from Austria and he was inspired from Romantic German castles too. Keep this paragraph in your mind, we may catch some resemblance between Neuschwanstein Castle from here.

Main style of Pena Palace is ‘Neo-romanesque (romanesque revival)’ inspired by 11th and 12th century Romanesque architecture. Palace is mixture architectonic styles and motifs; Moorish, Neo-Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, Renaissance and Indian, Chinese, Wagnerian influences (inspired by Wagner’s operas) One more point for resemblance, you will see on below.

Pena Sarayi’nin asil stili;  11. – 12. yy Romantik mimarisinden esimlenen ‘Neo-Romantiktir (Romantizmin canlanmasi)’. Saray ise mimari stil ve motiflerin karisimidir. Mesela; Magribi, Neo-Gotik,  gec Portekiz Gotigi (Manueline), Barok, Ronesans ve Hint, Cin, Wagner ekolu (Alman besteci Richard Wagner’in etkisinde olusan akim). Benzerlik kismina bir puan daha! Asagida ne demek istedigimi anlayacaksiniz.

Ferdinand was a great master of Rosicrucians  therefore his palace has Rosicrucians cross symbols with alchemy. Furthermore you will see Moorish decors, Arabic symbols and letters on main entrance door, alchemical symbols and ornate windows. On the main entrance very obvious Arabic letters surprised me but after a short while, once upon a times this country ruled by Muslims.

Chapel is from original part of early monastery of Hieronymite monks. Manueline cloister (decorated with Hispani-Arabic tiles) and Alabaster from 16th century were kept originally from previous monastery. Many part of the palace is closed for restoration, you mostly tour outside but it is totally enough.

Sapel, Hieronymite Rahiplerindeki eski orijinal seklini korumaktadir.

For me most crappy part is Newt symbol carving of entrance of Queen’s terrace. It is symbolisation of creation of world. Extremely ugly, there must be +18 sign on it, maybe +21. I am still. I am scare even  now while I am writing about it.

Su an yazarken bile korkuyorum.

King ordered to have romantic gardens on palace’s surrounding areas. In the park you will see more Arabic influences, especially there is Islamic style pavilion an it has fountain of the small birds which has spherical dome with Arabic inscription. So lovely, even birds have pavilion.

Further upper part of the park, there are very nice viewpoints towards to Saint Catherine’s Height. If you visit there around sunset time, you would catch an amazing sunset over Atlantic.

Parkin yukari kisimlarinda ise Aziz Catherine’nin yerine dogru cikarsaniz harika gozlem noktalari bulacaksiniz. Eger gun batimina dogru giderseniz, Atlantik Okyanusu’nun uzerinde harika bir gun batimi izleyebilirsiniz.

NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE / KALESI

IMG_0618

A castle built to honour German composer with fantasy and dreams of ‘fairytale king’ (King Ludwig II) and imagine entire gigantic castle built only one person’s accommodation. Interesting ? Yes! I don’t know what to say.

Yes, this breath taking beauty salutes you from top of the picturesque mountain scenery of German Alps in Bavaria region. Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most famous and well-known building in the world which is inspired to Walt Disney’s ‘Sleeping Beauty Castle‘ as well. It is the most photographed building in the world even though it is not to take a photo inside. I used to watch cartoons so much, maybe that is why I have been longing to see Neuschwanstein Castle so badly. Walt Disney was a wise man, Pluto and Neuschwanstein Castle, who knows what else.

Walt Disney gercekten bilge birisiymis. Pluto ve Neuschwanstein Kalesi. Kim bilir daha neler vardir.

IMG_0631

Neuschwanstein Castle’s name comes from ‘new swan castle’ as referring to ‘the swan knight’ from famous composer Richard Wagner. Initially castle name was Hohenschwangau Castle given by Ludwig II but after his death castle was renamed by government to Neuschwanstein Castle for intervening the confusion in between those two castle. I know both one are difficult to pronounce for non-German speakers, I know lot about castles but can’t still pronounce the names.

Neuschwanstein Kalesi’nin ismi ‘yeni kugu kalesi (new swan castle)’ olarak besteci Richard Wagner’in meshur operasi olan ‘swan knight (kugu sovalyesi)’den geliyor.

IMG_0637Neo-Gothic style yellow Hohenschwangau castle is hunting and summer residence since 1832 and it is still using by royal family of Bavaria time to time of the year. Also King Ludwig II was born in this castle. It locates in Hohenschwangau Valley too. You should visit this one too.

Neo-Gotik tarzli sari Hohenschwangau Kalesi Bavaria’nin kraliyet ailesi tarafindan 1832’den beri yilin belli zamanlarinda av ve yazlik evi olarak kullaniliyormus. Ayrica Kral Ludwig II bu evde dogmus. Bu kalede Hohenschwangau vadisinde bulunuyor. Bunu da ziyaret etmelisiniz.

Unlikely to other castle it was not built as defense neither any strategical issue, it  was build only for personal refuge of reclusive King Ludwig II. King never wanted to open his castle to public albeit to his plans, six weeks after his death government decide to open it to public and during the war times it was used as arcade or for other occasions. Now it is the most visited site of Germany. In Turkish we say ‘turning upside down in his grave’. I guess this phrase very right now, what king planned and what happened after him to his beautiful castle. He would definetely turn upside down in his grave.

King has a fantasy for construction of the castle from his childhood. Since he was young he had been sketching his dream fantasy castle. I have my sketches from secondary school but I am far far away making a castle for myself, not even barrack. I should take King Ludwig II as a role model to myself. His inspiration for castle is mixture of his journey to Warburg-Eisenach castle and Chateau de Pierrefonds when he was young and his intense admiration of operas of Richard Wagner. Castle was replaced on the ruins of two twin Hohenschwangau castle after blown up them in 1868. I guess Wagner is very lucky man, there is castle honored to him and his works, it is still shining. Is there anything for Mozart or Tchaikovsky, they are more famous, aren’t they ?

IMG_0617

Actual construction was started in 1869 and planned to be completed within 3 years, although it is still unfinished today. Ok, I got it king was definitely from our era, he is like todays contractors, what is finishing it within 3 years ? In inside still ongoing works, you may notice it during you tour which is very short in terms of its dimensions from outside.

Draft plan of the castle was sketch by Christian Jank who was theatrical designer, thus entire castle reminds you you are walking in the stage. Project realized by architect Eduard Rledel. However Ludwig II’s touch of the design went so far and after a while castle became his creation. I am naming him as ‘architect king’.

Lakin Ludwig II’nin tasarima cok fazla mudahil olmasindan dolayi tasarim sadece onun urunu olmus. Onu, ‘mimar kral’ olarak adlandiriyorum artik.

Castle initially designed with Neo-Gothic style but completed with Romanesque Revival style touches of Medieval castle. Decoration inspired by characters and decorations of Wagner’s operas at the end.

Unlike many other castle and 19th century buildings, Neuschwanstein Castle was intentionally planned to be built as asymmetric building.

IMG_0621

Castle designed with different styles and motifs, we see different architectural styles inside the castle;

  • Two storey church like throne room with Byzantine domed architectural style. It was completed with steel frame work.
  • Paintings and decorations and on semicircular arches with Romanesque style.
  • Slim tower with Gothic style.
  • Knights’ house gallery with Art-Nouveau.
  • Study room with Arabic style.
  • Bedroom with Neo-Gothic.
  • Rococo and Baroque styles are seen as well.

Kale farkli bircok stil ve motif ile tasarlanmis, kalenin icinde farkli mimari stilleri gorebiliriz;

  • 2 katli kiliseye benzer taht odasinda Bizans Dom mimarisi. Celik destek sistemleri ile tamamlanmis.
  • Resimler, dekorasyonlar ve dairesel kemerlerde Romantik stil.
  • Ince kulede Gotik.
  • Sovalyelerin galeri odasinda Art-Nouveau.
  • Calisma odasinda Arap tarzi.
  • Yatak odasinda Neo-Gotik.
  • Ayrica Rococo ve Barokta yer yer goruluyor.

Castle was constructed with latest technology of 19th century;

  • Toilets with automatic flushings on every floor.
  • Battery-powdered bell system for telephone and servants
  • Automatical heating for oven in the kitchen.
  • Hot air for clarifier running through entire castle (pipes for heating running through behind the walls)
  • Running warm water. Water supplying by nearby spring from 200 meters above the castle.
  • Advanced technology scaffolding and cranes were used on the construction process.

  • Her kattaki tuvaletlerde otomatik sifon.
  • Telefonlar ve hizmetciler icin kullanilan akulu zil sistemi.
  • Firin icin otomatik isitma sistemi.

Within above mentioned styles and technology;  I may say it is one of the most exaggerated and flamboyant place I have ever seen. So much decoration, so much details only for one person’s refuge. Most striking part is grotto inside in between rooms. What kind of fantasy ? Other striking part is ‘rectangular tower’ with 45 meter height. Why would you need this height ? If it is for observation there are already courtyards with nice panoramic views.

IMG_0620In 1884, he moved to unfinished building to be able to observe the ongoing construction. There would be more than 200 rooms, when it will be completed but only 14 rooms were completed before the king’s death.  Unfortunately he only slept there only 11 nights. Luck ? Life ? What ever ? I really felt so bad for architect king. 11 days ? you can’t even walk in all 200 rooms in 11 days.

1884’te devam eden isi takip edebilmek icin kral bitmemis kaleye tasinmis. Bittigi zaman 200’den fazla oda olmasi planlaniyormus ama kralin olumune kadar sadece 14 oda tamamlanabilmis. Malesef ki kral kalede sadece 11 gece kalabilmis.  Sans ? Hayat ? Ya da her neyse ? Gercekten mimar kral icin cok kotu hissettim. 11 gun ? 11 gunde 200 odayi bile gezemezsin.

At the end I do not know how to make any resemblance in between them. There is not any! Apart from German kings and being far-relative. Pena was for family residence and Neuschwanstein was only for one person who lavished his wealth with construction and took on dept so much.  Pena with its vivid colors becomes very humble to me after Neuschwanstein. But the technology were used on it and also his   determinations to achieve his goal and his dreams mesmerized me. I thinks this deserve a huge applause…

I put some hints on above for you to compare, now merge them all and make your conclusion.

Yukarida kiyaslamaniz icin bazi ipuculari birakmistim, simdi siz onlari birlestirin ve kendi sonucunuzu olusturun bakalim.

Pena Palace is named Europe’s best castle and Neuschwanstein is third.

But still Neuschwanstein is my no.1 building…

What is yours ?

Ama Neuschwanstein benim icin no.1…
