Venice is an artistic city with all its nostalgia. When you add galleries, exhibitions and biennale to the historical city, it becomes uber suber duber extra artistic city, and thus makes it heaven for art lovers. No exaggeration.

Abartmiyorum.
Turkish pavilion
 Turkish Pavilion / Turkiye Pavilyonu
Biennale is far-flung corners of the city and also on two major area; Arsenal and Giardini. You can visit both venue with one tickets in two days and for other exhibitions all around the city, they are already free except Armenian pavilion where is in San Lazzaro degli Armeni (you can get there with vaporette no: 20) I strongly recommend you to visit Armenian pavilion, totally worth it. Island is where they built their first monastery which has very beautiful peristyle courtyard and nice relaxing spots when they came to Venice and also they awarded with ‘Golden Lion’.Island is magnificent all by itself.

And also don’t leave the city without seeing the pavilions sprawled into city because it is one & only chance you to see city’s hidden gems of Venice.

This year’s theme is ‘ All the world’s futures’ and curated by Nigerian poet and critic Okwui Enwezar. This year there are 90 nations and 136 artists participating. You could visit Biennale between May 9th and November 22h. If you are planning to visit, make it in October since city is less crowded than summer. May to August, you barely walk in the city. I had experienced it and swear not to travel between May to August after Venice.

I guess best time would be October, because May to September are the high season and you barely walk in the city. If you prefer to enjoy the city also, skip the summer time but on the other hand Venice is nice in the summer. I leave you with this dilemma and I will jump to art now.

Of course we started from Arsenal where Turkish pavilion and Kutlug Ataman’s solo exhibition stand. It is a priceless feeling to make contemporary art tour inside this beautiful and historical place of Venice where back to 13th century with involving the history in it.

Without any doubt, best pieces of the entire biennale is of course Kutlug Ataman’s project which is ‘portrait of Sakip Sabanci’. I found it very beautiful and meaningful. Before we start the biennale tour we had small chats with people who had been before us wherever we saw people with leaflet or bags from pavilions; in cafes, in gelato shops… Ever since i saw the leaflet I wanted to see that that presentation and I witnessed that many people were like me, people were talking about his presentation ‘how smart and original was it’ but until I enter the pavilion, I didn’t know that crazy piece of art belongs to him. I have to admit, I was proud with him and his success.

In the room, you may seen at least thousands of thousands portrait on small screens, at the beginning I though they are random people all around the country. Yes they are from all around the country but not random. They are employees if Sabanci Holding. Sabanci family approached to Ataman  for working on a project together but at the beginning he refused to paint but after a while he thought and went with different idea which was portraying of the people who works for them. Imagine! Family employes so many people all around the country.

Portait of Sakip Sabanci is must must seen part of the biennale. Apart from my admiration, biennale team admired it too and the image on the front page of their brochure.

Hic tartismasiz bienalin en guzel eseri Kutlug Ataman’in ‘Sakip Sabanci’nin potresi’ isimli calismasidir.

Hayal etsenize! Sabanci ailesi tum ulke geneline is imkani sagliyor.

How I tackled the biennale one day ? How ? I had to! It was my first time in Venice, I had limited time for discovering the city, seeing the galleries and biennale hence I had to tackle. Don’t worry i didn’t miss anything…

1- Choose the interesting ones on the leaflet and from adverts.
2- Asked other people is the best way. We met with lady in the restaurant and she advised us to visit Armenian pavilion and two German ladies in the park in Giardini gave us all the useful to see list for Giardini.
We were full with informations, thanks to sweet German ladies and of course we pay them back and we advised them to visit Armenian pavilion. I guess, I deserve to be enter free to there after all I have done. By the time we went there and came a cross with them and visited together. Sometimes you meet with people on the roads and you learn much more than you think. I still remember those big art-lover ladies. If you would visit Venice 2018 biennale, you would definetely see them.
IMG_8778Bienali nasil bir gune sigdirdim ? Nasil ? Mecbur olunca!

O, iki sanat asigi kadin kalen hatiramda. Eger 2018 bienalini ziyaret ederseniz, eminim ki onlari goreceksiniz.

IMG_8400New Zealan pavilion is one of the most most interesting one and it is about NSA and Edward Snowden. At first, while we were walking inside the old library on our touristic tour, we couldn’t figure it out, ‘what are these space gadgets’ ‘what are doing in here’ and many many questions about the contrast in between library and modern space things. Of course on that time,we didn’t know that this contrast was the part of biennale. Ok, I am admitting in here, I learned that it was New Zealand pavilion while I was reading about biennale after I back to home and suddenly reason of that contrast pops up. Now I am thinking that it was genius idea to make it there with that theme. Bravo.

Bravo.
Next year, will be 15th architectural biennale  and curotor is Alejandro Aravena from Chile and theme is ‘reporting from the front’ and architects are going to show their works about ‘living conditions for people all over the world’. Aravena is known with his work about house development and equality about dwellings. I love his philosophy. Last time directed by Rem Koolhaus and it was chosen best biennale ever.

Sili’li mimar Alejandro Aravena’nin kuratorlugunde gelecek yil, 15. mimari bienal gerceklesecek.

Looking forward to see 2016 Architecture Biennale.
2016 mimari bienalini ise sabirlisizlikla bekliyoruz.
